T.N. Kaul has rightly
said, "It was not inevitable and would not have happened but for the British policy of
divide and rule. It would also not have happened if the Congress had shown a little
more consideration for the Muslim League, as Gandhiji wanted. He tried very hard to
placate Jinnah by offering him the Prime Ministership or Presidency of an undivided
India. But Jinnah's mind was made up. He did not trust Gandhiji much less Nehru,
Azad and Patel and stuck to his guns. He wanted Pakistan at any cost."
