Alternative to Partition?

T.N. Kaul has rightly said, "It was not inevitable and would not have happened but for the British policy of divide and rule. It would also not have happened if the Congress had shown a little more consideration for the Muslim League, as Gandhiji wanted. He tried very hard to placate Jinnah by offering him the Prime Ministership or Presidency of an undivided India. But Jinnah's mind was made up. He did not trust Gandhiji much less Nehru, Azad and Patel and stuck to his guns. He wanted Pakistan at any cost."
